CLEANING OUT MY LIFERead Now
As you may have seen, if you follow me in Instagram, we recently moved to a small apartment. It was not exactly a planned move and required a great deal of down-sizing. I wasn’t particularly looking forward to having to go through all the items we acquired in our 13 years together, but it ended up being one of the best things I could have done.
It was really an eye-opener to see how much STUFF we had. Things we had moved across 2 states (twice), stuff that was just sitting in containers I hadn’t looked at in a decade plus, mainly just a bunch of stuff. It made me think about how we have become a society of hoarders. Why do we hold on to things, do the items we have hold a value or serve a purpose, how did we get to this place where we can’t let things go?
During this process I let go of so many “things”, old photos, corsages from prom, my husbands ridiculous bouncy ball collection and so much more. It was so freeing to get rid of this weight. It was a weight I didn’t even realize we were carrying.
I am not saying to just throw everything away. I am saying that it might be time to open those old storage containers and go through the things that you own. Do you have clothes in your closet you can’t wear? Are you hanging on to old knick-knacks that no longer matter to you? Really take some time and evaluate why you have the “stuff” you have and what purpose it has in your life.
Before we moved I cleaned out a great deal of things that I knew I had no need for. I sold furniture that we weren’t going to be able to keep or that we no longer wanted. I donated so many things! For the items that I knew I was going to need time to go through, I moved them to our new place.
I spent about a week simply organizing and going through old photos, memory boxes, the random items we had in our night stands etc. I focused on what really mattered to me and let the other things go. I now have a home that is organized, clear of excess, and am no longer hanging on to things that don’t add value to my life.
I can say, cleaning out my life has opened me up creatively and made room for the wealth, abundance, and adventure this year will bring.
