Last year I decided to take a leap and make a vision board. I had read so many posts on Instagram and articles from people who had found a path to their successes through using them. I found the perfect board at Homegoods and was super excited to get mine put together and see my vision every day. I wanted to feel inspired to achieve my goals. I spent time collecting the perfect quotes, pictures, and goals.
I put everything together on my board. It was visually appeasing. I felt like I had accomplished what I had set out to do in creating my board. All I had to do was look at it daily and create a plan to reach those goals. In reality, my board was basically a pretty checklist. It was just another list of things for me to complete. Another list of items that I believe would help me improve my life and my happiness. Truthfully, it mostly made me feel like a failure. I would look at it every month and think, “oh look another thing I didn’t achieve.” It became something I just avoided looking at daily…. which was difficult since it is right in front of my desk. This month I decided that I was going to re-design my board. I did not want it to be an aesthetically pleasing checklist. I cannot handle having to look at it daily and imagine drawing a line through the items I’ve completed. Instead, I created an inspiration board. I carefully selected quotes and images that remind me of the life I am working to build for myself and my husband. I selected items that make me feel inspired to continue working towards what I want in life. Creating a place of peace and happiness. Working with my husband to improve our health and wellness. Leaving space for change and growth. I included items about my home, my relationship (with myself and my husband), places I want to visit, building my blog and designing a life that I want to live. Reaching that point where I no longer have to remember to find my happiness and that I just get to live my happiness. Checklists are great but they are not very inspirational. I already feel so much better every day that I look at my board. I feel a desire to create and continue building the life I want to live. If a vision board works for you that is wonderful. If you are like me and find that it is not really helping you accomplish what you set out to accomplish…. try something new and take a different approach.
